I have been composing or writing music for over 10 years - primarily as a result of my trumpet playing for Latin, Jazz, Big Band songs. I am a proud member of The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers also known as ASCAP. Although I write mostly my own compositions, I have also collaborated with other wonderful "tunesmiths" along the way. Since I am a professional musician, I am very good at arranging and producing as well.
Since I have a formal education in music, I can compose music for films, commercials or other media - not just for album production. I am well experienced at arranging music for all purposes.
Today with powerful computers it seems that anyone can write music nowadays. While such programs have been very helpful to the newbie, they do not replace the expertise of a qualified and experienced musician. Truthfully it takes knowledge and experience to achieve a natural sounding score.
My clients have hired me as their composer as I am a experienced and knowledgeable musician. I am fully capable of playing several instruments to professional standards including trumpet, sax, guitar (6 or 12 string, electric or acoustin, and bass), drums, keyboards, violin, etc. It turns out that good composers need to be able to write for a number of instruments and of course, they needs to have a deep understanding of those instruments (brass, percussion, string, etc).
To be truthful, I am highly capable of producing a long intricate music score, but songwriting is not my individual strength. However, I am very good at working collaboratively with a songwriter and relating the idea musically for instruments that the songwriter may not have considered. For example, my work with Alex Torres y Los Reyes Latinos was often collaborative. Take a moment and see my discography. This type of skill is very helpful for television, film and recording studios for projects such as arranging, orchestration, music beds and song composition. This type of relationship has historical roots such as Sir Elton John (composer, singer, pianist) and Bernie Taupin (lyricist), and of course Lennon and McCartney.
Although I was formally trained on writing music on sheet music paper - today I often use computers. This is faster and develops documentation for each instruments musical part. Once complete, the "score" shows each note, key and instructions for each musician to read on sight.
